Stickers to the rescue! Instructions for using stickers in working with the team

Have you ever worked on a large volume of information, faced with a situation where there were a lot of questions and all the material seemed disconnected and incoherent? Have you ever spent hours, sometimes days, thinking and arguing with colleagues in search of meaning or solutions?

The ideal and simple tool for such situations will be ordinary stickers, because they have 3 unique advantages:

stickers are the perfect size to fit one complete thought;
they easily stick to a smooth surface and can stay there for a long time;
they can be easily re-glued from place to place many times.
During the training “stickers: a visual way to solve problems”, I thoroughly analyze the key techniques for working with stickers that allow you to answer questions:

How do I put all the necessary information together?
How do I structure the available information and apply it to solve the problem?
In this article, I will look at two ways to use stickers in group work.

Option 1. There was a need to sort out the accumulated issues, for which there is no grouped information: it is located in the minds of project participants or in different programs and applications.

The purpose of this option is to collect scattered information.

Examples of issues to solve:

How can I increase customer / visitor satisfaction in a cafe?
How do I set up a new ad campaign?
Why do most potential employees refuse a job offer in our company?
How to increase project profitability by 10%
In this situation, the first thing to do is to collect all the information and fix it in one place: alternatively, on a Board or flipchart. For this purpose, it is convenient to use stickers, since after collecting the information, it will need to be analyzed, grouped, and so on, and in this case the stickers can be moved repeatedly.

Rules for participants:

One sticker must contain one complete thought.
The information on the sticker is clear and concise!
Bad example: “A lot of complaints from customers!»

Good example: “Many customers complain about long service and a large number of documents.”

Benefits of this option:

Save time: all participants simultaneously write on their stickers the necessary information on the issue under discussion. None of the participants is waiting in line to speak.
Inclusion of all participants: each participant can fill in an unlimited number of stickers in accordance with the agreed rules. Everyone participates. There are no people who sit quietly in the corner.
Fair play: there are no those who dominate and do not allow other participants to speak out. Everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
Anonymity: stickers can be left unsigned so that information is more objective, open and honest.
How to organize:

Define the goal and prepare the meeting.

For this event, you will need:

an audience large enough to accommodate all participants;
Board or sheet of flip chart;
stickers for all participants;
handles.
Create a creative atmosphere, give introductory information about the purpose of the meeting, and distribute stickers and pens to participants. At this stage, you can use associative questions, so-called “stimulators of mental activity”. These are individual words or phrases: “add…”, ” replace…”, ” change the sequence…”, and so on.

During operation, you must observe silence. There are no time limits.

After all participants have finished writing, put the stickers in the designated place and allow time for all participants to get acquainted with the full information.

The received information can be recorded on a sheet, in electronic form, to continue working with the received list. But the best option is to leave it on the Board for a few days with the opportunity for all participants to add new ideas and information. After a few days, you can go back to the updated list and continue working with it.

Option 2 is used when it is necessary to analyze information and establish complex relationships, as well as to deal with particularly confusing and incomprehensible, at first glance, problems. This option can be used for creative sessions when you need to analyze the information received, for example, when using the above option 1.

The purpose of this option is to show complex relationships between information elements.

Examples of issues to solve:

Find a solution to reduce the speed of processing requests from Customers
Understand the reason for violation of payment terms by Customers
Benefits of this option:

Improves understanding of the situation. Analysis and establishment of relationships between events and facts can give an answer to the question: “what is the true reason for this particular situation?”
Base for creating an action plan. The information obtained about the relationships and the true causes of the problem will help to form a more concrete action plan for further work to eliminate them.
Use for creative unstructured sessions.
How to organize:

Define the goal and prepare the meeting.
Define the principles for creating the map. Formulate questions that will help you identify the stickers you need and identify the relationships between them.
Identify the root sticker that reflects the problem. Use a different color sticker to display it. Place it in the center. Sometimes several key issues are highlighted for analysis, so there should be several stickers.
Identify related stickers by consistently asking the same question. For convenience, place them next to each other. This step is repeated several times until you have established all the relationships.
Add arrows to show the relationships.
Check the completed map.

As you can see, stickers are a convenient and affordable tool for analyzing and solving complex problems. They can be used for working meetings, Planning meetings, and organizational and strategic sessions.
